What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that communicates the environmental impact of your product or system. Based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the EPD presents the environmental footprint from raw material extraction to disposal. When based on the same Product Category Rules (PCR), EPDs enable transparent comparisons between products - helping customers and businesses make more sustainable choices.

Although not yet mandatory, EPDs are rapidly gaining popularity, particularly in the construction industry. Globally, more than 17,000 EPDs have already been published.

Who Benefits from an EPD?

Manufacturers
An EPD provides a credible way to document the environmental performance of your products. This transparency strengthens your brand and appeals to environmentally conscious customers.

Construction Industry
EPDs are valuable tools for meeting environmental requirements and achieving green certifications, offering a competitive edge in tenders and large-scale projects.

Consumers
Environmentally aware consumers benefit from EPDs by gaining clear, standardized information that empowers informed, responsible purchasing decisions.

Why is an EPD a Smart Investment?

EPDs are among the most trusted tools for comparing the environmental impacts of similar products. Their use is expanding quickly for several key reasons:

  • Green Building Certifications:
Frameworks like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rely on EPDs to support sustainability assessments.

  • EU Legislation & Standards:
The European regulatory landscape increasingly encourages the use of EPDs.

  • Public Procurement:
In several European countries, EPDs are either required or strongly recommended for public tenders and large-scale construction projects.
